In micro- or nano-encapsulation, a tiny solid or liquid core is surrounded by a special coating. To release the core, the coating can be ruptured through squeezing, melting, dissolving or through chemical processes. Micro-encapsulation is used in many current applications such as scratch-and-sniff coatings, electronic ink in e-readers, slow-release medicines, and even mood rings.
